Discipline Vs Motivation.

"discipline"|

The winner is Discipline…

While weight training in gym I wondered that is motivation the only tool that can help me. But then again motivation is temporally. It boosts the energy level for a short period of time. Getting motivated is good but in the longer run it won’t help. I may be motivated to work out for 2, 3 days but after that my main source of motivation will fade away and what left will be a Routine, a pattern of simple disciplined life style. Motivation is everywhere. You see people watch something or read something or attend a good conference they will instantly get motivated, but that just leaves them “motivated”. There is a huge vacuum after the motivating step.

Discipline is consistent. It takes lots of guts to be disciplined. Discipline is repeated every day. It is habitual. Discipline doesn’t sound like fun, but it’s how you see results. You cannot get disciplined in a month or two. It takes a lot of hard work to get disciplined and STAY disciplined. Disciplined requires focus while motivation requires nothing.  If you are disciplined you will ultimately be Happy.

Discipline requires simple changes in life, like if you want start a project Just do it, sit at your workplace and stick to the Plan. No matter what happens don’t do anything else expect the desired project. The world will not end in 60 or 90 minutes trust me. I made my reading habit a while ago, I disciplined myself that I would read some chapters of a certain book and then have breakfast. Now no matter what happens I don’t have breakfast before reading and now it has become a part of my lifestyle. So slowly start disciplining your selves and God willing your life will become Awesome…

    Well written AAmir.
Seems you have created a good habit of reading books before eating breakfast.
I found out that reading at night before sleeping is also good because it gives us a sound sleep.
I am also trying to cultivate habit of reading everyday but somehow not able to. After reading your post I figured out that i was motivated to read for sometime and then i left.

    I should seriously be disciplined.
THIS IS DEFINITELY A GOOD READ.

    Cheers man!

OKAY FIRSTLY THIS CAPS PROBLEM IS REAL….FIX THIS!

SECONDLY….YOU HIGHLIGHTED TWO FACTORS THAT GET THINGS DONE IN OUR LIFE…ONE BEING DISCIPLINE AND THE SECOND BEING MOTIVATION…AND IT SEEMS THAT YOU KINDA FAVOR DISCIPLINE OVER MOTIVATION…

PERSONALLY I THINK MOTIVATION PRECEDES DISCIPLINE…IT IS THE FIRST REQUIREMENT FOR ANY NEW PROCESS THAT YOU WANT TO START IN LIFE. WITHOUT MOTIVATION TO START SOMETHING NEW, YOU CANT ACHIEVE THE REQUIRED DISCIPLINE TO KEEP DOING THAT THING CONSISTENTLY SINCE YOU WONT START IT IN THE FIRST PLACE :) .. YOU MENTIONED ABOUT TRAINING IN THE GYM AND ALSO ESTABLISHING A READING HABIT…WOULD YOU HAVE STARTED BOTH THESE THINGS IF YOU HAD NOT BEEN MOTIVATED ENOUGH..?? THE ANSWER IS NO OF COURSE… SO THE CONCLUSION IS MOTIVATION IS IMPORTANT TO TAKE THAT FIRST STEP….AND DISCIPLINE IS IMPORTANT TO COMPLETE THAT PROCESS….FOR ANY NEW PROCESS THAT FIRST STEP IS THE MOST IMPORTANT STEP…AND THAT IS WHERE MOTIVATION PRECEDES DISCIPLINE…

    :)

Ali rafi I mentioned that motivation is good but it dies soon we need to focus on Discipline to keep the thing running. An year back I started gym but i left after a week or so because that was just “motivation” and now God willing Its my forth month because of a routine.
p.s that problem will be solved soon :)

very well written Aamir . yup i agree with you that discipline is very important some scholar once said that ” If you dedicate your attention to discipline in your life you become smarter while you are writing than while you are hanging out with your pals or in any other line of work “. p.s , sorry dont remember who said these lines the name just slipped out of my mind . :)

I will quote you the case of Muhammad Ali…it was his motivation to be the best that made him the legend that we know him to be. All his opponents were professionals who followed routines stacked with discipline but in the end it was the sheer motivation of Ali that made him a three time world champion. His first fight with Ken Norton is a clear example of that. It was his motivation that made him carry on with the fight even when his jaw got broken.

Like I have mentioned before…it is your motivation that precedes the formulation of a disciplined routine. i understand that it is discipline that makes you stick to your routine but then again the toughest step was the first one…which you only achieved when you gained the right amount of motivation… think about it !! ;) :)
